Phil Lang has been running for since his teens, first for Oakland Mills High School, then at UMBC and Frostburg State and always as a Howard County Strider. Phil has combined an exceptional running career with exemplary service to the Striders and the community. He has served on the Club’s Board of Directors for 16 years and was President during 2004 and 2005. Phil was Race Director of the Metric Marathon for five years and inaugurated the Metric 5K. He has represented the Striders at eight RRCA National Conventions and has served as the Maryland State RRCA Representative since 2005. Phil has worked extensively to promote interest in youth running, with the Junior Striders, the Oakland Mills High School Cross Country (coach for 13 years), and through summer high school runners’ programs, etc.

He helped form the first Striders-sponsored Racing Team and is proud of the fact that in his career he has missed only one club challenge race (he was injured). Phil was the Striders’ Runner of the Year in 2002, and his PRs include: 4:45 for 1600; 17:01 for 5K; 34:45 for 10K; 57:45 for 10 miles; and 2:47 for the marathon (he’s run 36 marathons including 14 Boston’s, all at an average time of three hours). And, he’s competed in nine 24 hour relays, where all but two of his 200+ miles were at a sub – six minute pace.
