Howard County Junior Striders
Spring Track - Fall Cross Country
The Howard County Striders is a running club with over 1,000 members and activities include programs for youth and adults, fun runs, weekly races and group training runs.
This summer, as in the past, there will be 1 mile fun runs for families on most Tuesday nights starting at 7:30pm in the neighborhood directly across the street from Centennial High School.
On Wednesday nights in the summer there are low key weekly 2 & 6 mile races that start at 6:30pm.
Please check the calendar for the exact dates and locations of the Tuesday and Wednesday events this summer.
In the fall, starting around Labor Day, the Junior Striders cross-country team will begin their season. This program is for runners ages 6 to 14 (1st through 8th grade). The runners will have an opportunity to:
• participate in a healthy outdoor exercise,
• participate in twice a week group practice sessions with experienced coaches,
• compete in meets with other junior runners,
• qualify to compete at regional and national running competitions,
• become a member of the Howard County Striders & the RRCA,
• attend end of year awards party.
The cross-country team will compete at several races during the season. Most of the meets are in Frederick County on Sunday afternoons. Race distances are based on the runners age as of the 12/31 of each year. Runners 6 and under will run a 1k (.62 miles). 7-8 year olds run a 2k (1.24 miles). 9-12 year olds run 3k (1.86 miles). 13-14 year olds run a 4k (2.48 miles). Races are typically on grass and dirt path trails at parks or on school grounds.
