Last Sunday at Howard Communiy College, the Howard County Junior Striders successfully defended their cross country championship against several other youth teams from the Baltimore-Washington area. The Junior Striders faced strong challenges from the Linganore Running Club and the Middletown Knight Striders. The home team used outstanding performances from Sean Crawford (1st, 6 & U boys), Tiiffany Lang (1st, 7-8 girls), Caitlin Fox (2nd, 9-10 girls), Joey Esposito (2nd, 11-12 boys), and Nicole Shouse (2nd, 11-12 girls). The best race of the day may have been the final 4 km race in which Howard County's Scott Dagley chased Olney's Alec Truantos and finished just behind. Scott set a personal record of 14:58- the first time he ever broke 15 minutes for a 4 km cross country race. The youngest runner in the race, Howard County's Brittany Lang, ran her 1 km race in a superlative 5:22 and was the second girl to finish. Aged 4 to 14, the young runners not only contended with each other, but with a lot of mud, which resulted from recent rains. The mud was so deep and slippery in one place that race officials placed planking across 12 feet of it to prevent the runners from foundering. Not one runner fell down, but mud caked the legs of all finishers.
The Junior Striders Home Meet drew 118 runners representing nine different cross country teams. The race was directed by Jim Carbary, with assistance from head coach Joe Esposito and Brad Speierman, who mowed a great deal of the grass the day before. The Junior Strider gratefully acknowledge the help of Steve Musselman of the Howard Community College.
