07/24/08 Due to unprecedented response, registration for the Next Step Marathon/Half Marathon program is closed. We've had our first two sessions and the turnout has been wonderful. Our great, dedicated team of coaches would like to maintain the high level of individual attention we've been able to give our past participants and so we will not take anyone new for this season. Thank you for your support!

Train with a group for your fall marathon!

What: 15-week speed training program, primarily on track, but sometimes on roads, trails

Where: Oakland Mills High School track

When: Wednesday nights, 6:00 - ~7:45 p.m. (exception: Tuesday, Oct. 7)

Start: Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Finish: Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Requirements (for a running a marathon - less for a half-marathon):

• Howard County Striders member
• Ability to run/walk ten miles
• Currently running 25 miles/week
• There is NO speed requirement

The Next Step Marathon program will help you tailor your marathon running program and teach you how to use speedwork to improve your marathon time. We will break into groups according to speed for track workouts, so you will have friendly inspiration! Coaches will work with you individually to help you tailor your program to your particular goals and around your running life’s ‘obstacles’ (e.g. work, vacations).

Though the group will only meet officially on Wednesday nights, you are encouraged to join the “Bagel Run” on Saturday mornings for your weekly long run. You may also find new running partners and routes!

Other features: The program will include post-workout speakers on various topics such as: nutrition, stretching, injury prevention, Chi running, race strategy, etc.

Goals: The Baltimore Marathon on Saturday, October 11 is nominally the goal event. However, this program is also very suited to those running other fall marathons, particularly Marine Corps Marathon and New York City Marathon.

Many runners also use this program to train for 10-mile and half-marathon races.

Fee: $40 for the Next Step marathon program, checks only.

Note: Please ensure that you are a member of the Howard County Striders prior to completing the NEXT STEP application. Sign up to be a Howard County Strider for the 2008 calendar year (to register, see link under 'Program Information'). Membership must be paid for with separate check.

Coaches: Bill Arbelaez, Shane Bogan, Joe Boys, Sandy Boys, Sarah Cepada, Patrick Clark, Lisa Fichman, Pat Wilkerson
