Weems McFadden started running at Annapolis High School in 1972 and enjoyed competing from the start. After high school, he attended UMBC where he ran cross country, indoor, and outdoor track all four years. His favourite college track distance was the half mile, but he participated in other events as well. After graduating from UMBC in 1980, Weems stopped running until the summer of 2004. His plan going forward is to run mostly 5K, 10K, and 10M races. Eventually, when his times begin to get slower, he intends to move up to the marathon distance.
