The cherry blossoms had reputedly reached their peak, but the morning of the Charry Blossom 10-Miler was so drizzly and dismal that no one seemed to notice. The weather was, however, excellent for running, and 54 Howard County Striders (at last count) participated in the annual rite of Spring. To no one's surprise, the premiere Striders Mark Gilmore and Chris Chattin posted the fasted Howard County times as they escorted the women's winner Elena Meyers through most of the 10 miles. Breaking 60 minutes but not setting a personal record, Hall of Famer Bea Marie Altieri ran the fastest Howard County times among the women. Tunde Morakinyo, Bill Arbelaez, and Brad Speierman, all of whom are Junior Strider coaches, took full advantage of the weather to set personal bests at the10-mile distance. Master Bob Burns and Grandmaster Mick Slonaker came within half a minute of breaking the hour barrier, while Piriya Pinit placed among the 55-59 year old men. "I couldn't understand what the Kenyans were saying," Mr. Slonaker remembered about his experience so far up in the field. (Times are chip times- no word yet on the Strider racing teams, but we seem to have beaten Montgomery County.)
