Clyde's 10K Race Results

"I love it when an unknown wins," chortled reporter Stan Ber of the Columbia Flier about the victors of the 25th Annual Clyde's 10k last Sunday. "And they must be unknown if Dave Tripp can't identify them!" And so it was. Local favorites Mark Gilmore and Denise Knickman fell to John Supsic and Atalelech Ketema- both of whom were born after the inaugural running of the race, and neither of which is unknown any more.

In the men's race, Supsic charged out with the lead pack of Gilmore and Kevin Stoves. He took the lead around the mile mark at the top of the first big hill, extended his lead at two miles, and had 20 seconds on Gilmore by the bottom of the second big hill on Route 108. "He kept extending his lead," commented Mr. Gilmore, who eventually placed second after Stoves dropped out on the same hill. A former Towson track and cross-country star, the 24-year-old Supsic crossed the finish line in 32:00 flat, over half a minute ahead of Gilmore. Supsic's training partner Paul Bourg finished in third, just a few seconds under 33 minutes.

"I didn't really see the lead [woman] except at the start," confided Denise Knickman about the women's race. "I wondered who she was." A native of Ethopia who recently moved to Washington, DC, Ketema dispatched the women's field with relative ease. Through an interpreter, she admitted the hills bothered her somewhat. "I never saw hills like that!" she said.

Most of her competition came from men, and she cruised through the 10 kilometers of suburban Columbia in 35:42, a new course record for women. Ketema has run 10k in 32:30, and her time at Clyde's might have been faster except she had run a 5k the day before!

The masters competition did recommend some familiar names. Howard County's own Dave Berardi challenged Joe Abernathy for the fastest man over 40, and the two had an excellent battle. Abernathy ran so fast (33:02), in fact, that he almost finished among the top three. "I was actually hoping he'd break into the top three so I would win the overall masters," said Berardi, who lost the battle for fourth. Among the over-40 women, Howard County's Vanessa Cox outran her friend Lisa Coleman-Warren, finishing fourth among all women in 39:33. The overall and age group winners received jackets, bags, and blankets from Clyde's. All runners received multi-color t-shirts commemorating the race.

"The real story is the chicken sandwiches," gushed Phil Lang, referring to the lavish refreshments provided by Clyde's of Columbia after the race. The restaurant treated finishers and volunteers to a post-race brunch that included the aforementioned chicken sandwiches, Clyde's chili, pasta salad, oranges and melons, fresh California strawberries, Powerade, Coca-Cola, hot dogs and bagels, and Budweiser.

Sponsored by the restaurant of the same name, Clyde's 10k has taken place every year since 1979 and is one of the principal sporting events of the local area. Indeed, with over 1100 participants, it has become thE largest sporting event of Howard County. The race is staged annually by the Howard County Striders, with the assistance of the Howard County Police, who provided traffic control at key intersections. Charlie Brown directed the event, and Kelley Eberhard served as Clyde's liaison.

Clyde's is the only Strider event that uses the Championchip system, which uses shoe transponders to register start and stop times of participants. The overall and first master awards were determined by "gun" time, while age group awards were determined by "chip" time.
