The fastest 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) race ever in Howard County happened last Sunday at the Annual Damien's Run. Some of the fastest talent in the area competed, vying for an extra $300 for breaking the four-year old course record of 15:08 . When the dust cleared, local favorites Mike Styczynski and Jeff Olenick and Philippe Rolly of Fairfax , VA , had all broken the record, but the bonus went to Rolle by the winning margin of a few seconds. Racing around the Columbia Gateway, the three of them took control of the race at the top of the first hill. "Sty", a one-time River Hill High School champion, managed to pass Olenick in the final half mile, but he couldn't quite reach Rolly, a well-known Virginia and DC champion. Rolly won by less than two seconds. Both he and Styczynski became the first runners to break 15 minutes for a 5k race run in Howard County . "They were wicked fast," noted one observer at the finish line.

Sherry Stick had no such adversity in winning the women's race, although her time of 18:24 fell well short of the women's course record ( 16:40 ). Howard Countians Vicki Lang and Robyn Humphrey didn't stand a chance. Robyn placed third overall among all women, but she traded her place with Vicki (fourth overall) to win the women's masters competition.

Dave Berardi, long a fixture on the Howard County racing stage, won the men's masters race.

Proceeds from Damien's Run for Recovery help combat teen substance abuse. Ralph Massalla, who tragically lost his own son to substance abuse, directed the race, which has raised over $100000 during its several year history. Ralph enjoyed the assistance of the Howard County Striders and the Howard County Police.

After the race, participants gathered in a parking lot at the Columbia Gateway and enjoyed a fine brunch of watermelon, fruit drinks, sub sandwiches, and pizza. The top three overall received cash prizes, while age group winners won cooler bags. A field of over 300 completed the 5k race on a warm, humid morning.
