Damien's Run for Recovery 5K Results

"They all wanted to give me a warm welcome to the masters' age category," said Gerry Clapper, who celebrated entry into the over-40 age group at Damien's Run for Recovery last Sunday. The 5 kilometer race around the Gateway Office Park drew an all-star field from the Washington and Baltimore running communities, although the prize of $100 for anyone setting a course record may have had more to do with field quality than with Gerry's birthday. The men's field included local speedsters Jim Hage, Andrey Kunzetsov, and Howard County's own Mark Gilmore, while Lee DiPietro and Naoko Ishibe lead the women's competition. Kunzetsov charged to the early lead and did not give his opposition much of a chance to catch up. By two miles, after climbing a sort hill, the flying Russian had opened a lead of nearly 50 meters on second-place Mark Gilmore and went on to win the race in 15:08, breaking the old course record by 24 seconds and securing himself an extra $100. Gilmore's own 15:22 also broke the record, while third-place Jim Hage came within six seconds of the old record of 15:32. "I had two problems: Andrey and Mark," Hage said. Not far behind the top men came Ms. Ishibe, who demolished the women's field and shattered the women's course record by over a minute. Her 16:37 marked the fastest 5k time ever run by a woman in Howard County, but she may have set the bar too high to repeat with another record-breaker in 2002!

Birthday-man Clapper thought that the abundance of fast runners would prevent him from receiving an award in his first race as a master, but he did place second among the 40-49 men. "That's because the older guys in my age group won overall awards," Gerry explained, referring to Hage and Kunzetsov (both 43 years old).

A cool front had swept through the area the day before the race, leaving the air clean and refreshingly cool, and many runners took full advantage of the weather as well as the relatively flat course. For instance, with an 18:53, Akintunde Morakinyo "cleanly broke" 19 minutes for the first time ever in a 5k race. Some families took advantage of the $25 entry for everyone in the family. Notably, the Espositio and Carbary families won six age-group awards total. The race drew over 400 entrants and had 397 finishers, a record field. Howard County Striders Steve Thienel and Julie Deutschmann celebrated their nuptuals by running the 5k. They disappear immediately after the race to get married, and Julie missed receiving her award (2nd, 30-39 women). "Are they consumating the union?" wondered race director Ralph Massella.

The 5 km road race memorializes Damien Massella, who died of a drug overdose. The race benefits Damien's Recovery, Inc. and the Phoenix II High School and raises awareness of drug problems in the youth community. In conjunction with the road race, the event also featured a two-mile "walk-and-talk" to promote communication between parents and kids about the dangers of substance abuse. Inn its third year, the race has raised $50 thousand for its cause.

Those who did not win cash prizes or age group awards, or who weren't getting married, enjoyed a post-race brunch featuring live entertainment from the group Thin Air and lavish refreshments including two 6-foot subs, 25 pizzas, 400 bagels, 300 bananas, 300 oranges, 30 watermelons, and salsa with "billions of chips." Many runners stayed around for random awards, and Judy Radas of Highland, MD, hit the jackpot with a USAir round-trip ticket to anywhere in the USA. Ralph Massella directed the race with the assistance of the Howard County Striders and the Howard County Police, who effectively closed off the Columbia Gateway for the duration of the race.
