Patrick Clark and Janeth Williams won the 5 mile race by considerable margins at Swansfield E.S. Doug Kuderna and Ellie Bateman set new course records for the 8 miler. The 8 miler hasn't been run in a while, but this hilly and sometimes confusing course (ask Ronnie Wong how many times he went around Little Patuxent Pkwy) will be run 2 times in the upcoming winter schedule. Melodie Bowler won the women's 2 miler for the 2nd week in a row with Dee Nelson taking 2nd.

Thunder Hill
2mi and 10K
12/2/01
A large field included many new folks at Howard County Striders weekly series race at Thunder Hill Elementary School. Allison Densmore and Ellie Bateman won the women's races. Ted Poulos narrowly beat Jason Tripp in the 2 miler. Doug Kuderna beat 2nd place Richard Morgan by a large margin. Six year old Samantha Speierman ran a 17:02 in the 2 miler, a time that many of us can envy. Seventy-nine year old Walt Washburn, from Virginia, came in 21st in the 10K with an impressive 58:31. Occasional weekly runner, Karsten Brown, traveling 2 hours to participate, ran an impressive 43:20 to finish 8th in the 10K. Many runners came from the Washington suburbs and Baltimore. Strider, Eric Katkow, did a fine job marking the course. However, this didn't keep several runners from taking a wrong turn on this confusing course.

Turkey Trot 10K
Prediction Run
11/23/01
The Howard County Striders Turkey Trot 10k has been a tradition for over 20 years, but the prediction fun-run had never drawn more than 200 entrants until this year when 204 registered. Without the aid of any watches or timing devices, participants attempted to run a hilly 10 km course through Jeffers Hill and finish at exactly 11 am. The closest finisher, not necessarily the fastest, won the coveted Golden Turkey Award. Many of the runners proved to have very accurate paces indeed. A total of 64 finished within one minute of 11 am. Crossing the finish line between two throngs, Leonard Thompson of Columbia, MD, proved the most precise, finishing within one second of the appointed hour. "I told you you'd be too fast if you passed me!" he proclaimed triumphantly at the awards ceremony. Mr. Thompson's method of strict pacing remains a mystery, although two other past winners of the Turkey Trot, Al Greuter and Denise Hyde, finished within 30 seconds of the hour. The Turkey Trot has been held every Thanksgiving under the direction of Dave and Judy Tripp, who benefited from the help of several volunteers. The youngest volunteers- Emily, Samantha, and Stephanie Speierman- received Godiva chocolate turkeys for their efforts.

9/30/01
Howard County Striders race at Jeffers Hill raised over $2100. from the generous contributions of the runners and volunteers. All proceeds are going to the American Red Cross disaster relief effort. The Striders thank Erin Phelps, whose inspiration helped spearhead this effort. Mrs. Vigorito, the Red Cross representative, offered information about how donations are utilized. Local victims were remembered with a moment of silence.
Susan and Brian Coghlan each knocked 2 minutes off their best previous 2 mile effort. Anne Brooker-Grogan ran a PR at 24:37. Luis Rosello was gratified with his 13:34, although he says this was not his career best. Kerrie Bowes (1st women) tried to keep up with Stephen Olenick & Dan Laukzemis during the 1st mile. Mike Brosenne overtook Gerry Clapper, who suffered a calf problem at mile 5 mark in the 10K race. Linda Kelly, saying "Steve Alpern made me do it", ran her 1st 10K race. Visitors, Pete Terech (training for Myrtle Beach) and Iggy Kass (visiting from Salem, Mass) also ran their 1st races at this event. Pat Keating, present with her husband Paul and new 11 week old addition, Carolyn, won the women's 10K. Barb Walters came in 2nd. Doug Kuderna left the pack way behind in the 15K with his 55:44 finish.

Longfellow ES 2mi, 10K & 15K
9/23/01
An equipment malfunction which wasn't discovered & corrected until after the 2 miler's finished, only allowed us to record finish times for the 10K & 15K racers. The few times shown below for the 2 milers were recorded by the runners themselves. The finish order is correct. Our apologies. We'll take steps to hopefully keep this from happening in the future. Here's the recap. Kerrie Bowes and Ted Poulos won the 2 mile race. New weekly runner, Kimberly Houston, took an impressive 3rd place behind Melodie Bowler (2nd in the women's event). Gerry Clapper, afflicted with some kind of bug, won the 10K. Ellie Bateman, seen at recent bagel runs, won the women's race in 46:21(5th overall), an excellent time for this hilly course. Keep an eye out for Doug Kuderna, who won the 15K. He's talking about including speedwork in his future training. Ronnie Wong, who just turned 55, brought a bag of pears and tomatoes to share with his fellow runners. Originally signed up for the 10K, Ronnie took a wrong turn and completed the 15K instead. Mikie Nard, usually a short distance runner, completed the 15K distance and came in smiling.
