Longfellow ES
March 23, 2003

French visitor, Geffrotin, was planning to run the DC marathon which was cancelled. Looking for another local race, he chose the Longfellow 15K. After finishing, he compared the Columbia hills to an area near the Pyrenees mountains where he normally trains. Julie Thienel set another course record, smashing Vicki Lang's old record by almost 4 minutes in the 15K race. Eric Bell keeps getting faster, outpacing John Chall to win the 10K race. Johnna Esposito won the womens 10K. Doug Kuderna keeps making it look easy, taking 1st place in the 15K by a substantial margin. Nine year old Brittney Rooks had a great run, winning her first weekly race in the 2 mile event. Eighty year old, Walt Washburn's 19:19 in the 2 miler, is a time many runners will envy.

Eve Sheridan, a new Columbia resident, won the women's 2 mile race. Masters runner, Ted Poulos, won the mens race with new weekly runner, Nigel Holder, not far behind. Several runners broke 40 minutes in the 10K. Doug Kuderna and course record holder, Vicki Lang, were the winners. Dave Tripp broke 17 minutes, and said he hadn't run that fast in quite a while. It was cold and the wind was biting.

Sarah Pigott, Carrie Dagley and Pat Huffman were the top women runners at this well attended Howard Co Striders race. Pat's fast time was a result of hard training since coming back from a recent injury. Hugh Harris was leading early in the 10K but finished 2nd behind Jason Tripp. Many new runners were present including a few from Middleburg, Va. Matt Skaggs and Daniel Jonas easily won the 2M and 15K races.

Jason Eichmiller easily won the 2 miler and thought racing in the snow was "the most fun I've had running in a while." Julie Thienel, the 5 mile winner, outpaced everyone with the assistance of her "Ice Joggers", metal studded treads that stretch over your running shoes.

RESOLUTION RUN 8K
1 January 2003 — Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center, Columbia

Top 20 | Pictures | Complete Results

On a rainy New Year’s morning, a group of 90 resolute runners competed not for the fastest but for most accurate to finish, without benefit of timing devices, an 8 kilometer course along the bike paths of Jeffers Hill and Long Reach in Columbia. The runners could start at any time but only the closest finisher to 11 am would win. They all tried to finish at exactly an hour before noon, but 74 after the appointed hour, while only 16 finished before. Ellicott City resident Steve Grufferman proved the most accurate, coming within 2.1 seconds of 11 am. Unfortunately, he did not think he had even come close and left before the award was given— a handsome clock engraved with “Resolution Run.”

For those not so accurate, and there were many, event director Dave Tripp staged a quiz based on four questions posted along the route. Circled letters of the answers, when unscrambled, formed the name of current newsmaker “Trent Lott.” Three persons successfully unscrambled the letters and each won a gift certificate.

After their soggy jogs, the resolution runners crowed into the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center for donuts, cider, and hot chocolate.
