All-Fruit Relay

17 teams with odd names braved a hot, humid day to carry a piece of fruit around the Oakland Mills 2 mile course. There were Limes, Apples, Oranges, Pears, Bananas, Pineapples, even a Starfruit circling the neighborhood. Team Dominate did just that in winning the race.

All Fruit Relay

The annual All-Fruit Relay Race was held by the Howard County Striders at Oakland Mills Middle School May 31. Team Dominate, wearing a bike helmet covered with fruit, cruised to an easy victory over several veteran teams. Team Dominate consisted of J. P. Allera, John Briguglio, Andrew Revelle, and Travis Boccher. Their winning time of 43:46 was the fastest time in recent memory for this 8 mile race where each runner ran a 2 mile leg.

Various fruits, including a pineapple and a mid-Eastern fruit called an etrog, were passed from runner to runner during the race.

All Fruit Relay

Neighbors in the Oakland Mills Community must have been perplexed watching the four members of Team Dominate speeding on foot through the neighborhood carrying a watermelon. Despite the relatively heavy baton, their middle of the pack finish was impressive. Other teams carried a variety of smaller fruit batons in this annual 4 x 2M relay race.

All Fruit Relay

Nine creatively named teams carried various fruit batons for this annual event, a 4 x 2 mile relay. “We Will Plummel You” was the winning team, but last place team, “Melon-choly” was admired for running with the largest fruit, a honeydew melon. The high 80’s temperatures added to everyone’s effort. Both 1st and last place teams won prizes, the “Columbia Running Routes” book, written by Feet First founder, Warren Ohlrich.

All Fruit Relay

The Howard County Striders had the largest turnout in recent memory for their 4×2 mile all-fruit relay at Oakland Mills Middle School. Runners handed off fruit batons, some of which became pretty messy.

The Rotten Raspberries eventually had to carry their baton in a bag.

Lindsay’s Fruit Dudes took first place, with the Centennial Kumquats seconds behind. The creativity of coming up with a team name was not lost on the Bluher Berries.

All Fruit Relay

The clouds gave way to partial sunshine for the All Fruit Relay, so named for the fruit batons, ranging from raisins to bananas. The Banana Slugs took top honors with the Rotten Apples placing 2nd. Most teams had 4 runners; other teams had to have a runner run 2 legs of this 4 X 2 mile event. Our youngest entrant, 9 year old Michael Gamble, was instrumental in helping his team finish under the 1 hour threshold.

All Fruit Relay

The clouds gave way to sunshine for Howard County Striders’ annual All Fruit Relay, named for the fruit batons ranging from grapes to bananas.

The Vikings team from Mt Hebron won by a large margin, averaging a remarkable 5:35 pace. Team Hunt, led by dad, Bud Hunt, finished 12th with the help of his 3 sons. A number of Oakland Mills runners were racing today, due in part to the encouragement of coach, Phil Lang. Steven Olenick deserves credit for running the 1st and last legs of King Cobra’s 3 person team and still nailing 3rd place in a competitive race. Weekly regulars, the Bowler and Esposito families, teamed up with Joe Esposito running the final leg. We thank Bill Arbelaez for painting fresh course marks.
