Because it offers cash prizes and a bonus of $500 for setting a course record, the Damien’s 5k always draws a few very fast runners. This year was no different. On the men’s side, Ethiopian native Tefera Demesse (13:45 5k PR and New York Road Runner of the Year in 2006-2007) squared off against Kenyan native Daniel Too (past winner of the bonus prize who recently ran a 14:44 at the Bel Air 5k) and two-time All-American from Carnegie-Mellon Brian Harvey (24:43 for 8k cross country). Demesse and Too opened the race with a furious sprint that “gapped” Harvey by 20 seconds at the mile mark. “The poor guy [Harvey] was running all by himself,” reported Dave Berardi, who viewed the battle from far, far behind the leaders. Demesee continued pounding the pace, drew away from Too in the second half of the race, and finished in 14:32, which is the fastest 5k ever run in Howard County. And maybe Baltimore, but we’re not sure.

The women’s race involved Ethiopian native Hirut Mandefro (Washington Running Report’s top-ranked woman with a recent 16:47 5k), All-American Esther Erb (winner of the 10,000-meter run, 35:45, at the 2008 NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships), and local favorite Stef Cummins (Howard County Strider women’s racing team). Mandefro seized the early lead, outrunning her two pacer “rabbit” runners, crushing her two female rivals, and finishing fourth overall. She was so anxious to claim the bonus that she pushed Pekka Stenhom (fifth overall) to run a little faster and pull her to the 16:41 that the bonus required. “I should have asked for a share of the prize money,” Pekka joked. Pekka as well as Hirut’s legs proved four seconds too slow for the bonus – she finished in 16:45.

“What a race that was,” said race director Ralph Massella. “I almost had to write two $500 checks!” The top three runners in each gender group received cash prizes, and the age group winners didn’t. The race serves as a fund-raiser for Damien’s Recovery Inc, which seeks to raise awareness of teen drug abuse and treatment. This year’s race drew a field of 268, most of whom romped around the loop at Columbia Gateway well behind Mendefro and Demesse. After the race, everyone enjoyed a brunch of pizza, subs, watermelon, and genuine organic lemonade.

All Fruit Relay

The annual All-Fruit Relay Race was held by the Howard County Striders at Oakland Mills Middle School May 31. Team Dominate, wearing a bike helmet covered with fruit, cruised to an easy victory over several veteran teams. Team Dominate consisted of J. P. Allera, John Briguglio, Andrew Revelle, and Travis Boccher. Their winning time of 43:46 was the fastest time in recent memory for this 8 mile race where each runner ran a 2 mile leg.

Various fruits, including a pineapple and a mid-Eastern fruit called an etrog, were passed from runner to runner during the race.

Improbably, the winner of the 31st Annual Clyde’s 10k had run 8.8 miles the day before the race, on much the same course as the race. Unconcerned about his pre-race workout, Howard County Strider Runner of the Year Tom Williams found himself running with a pack of other elite runners at the top of the hill at the one mile mark of the race, and threw in a surge “to see who’s in and who’s not.” Master runner Doug Mock was in, and Williams and Mock dueled for the next mile until they reached the undulations of Old Columbia Road, where Williams took the lead. “Most people think the key to the race is the long hill on Route 108,” Williams counseled. “But the key is really Old Columbia.” Firmly in first, Tom knew he had the race won when he reached the top of that long hill. “I may have glanced back when I turned onto Little Patuxent, but Doug wasn’t in sight.” Williams won easily in 33:20, while Mock finished second in 34:14. After he finished, Tom got two beers to celebrate.

Performing one of her patented “bunny rabbit starts,” Howard County’s master runner of the year Robyn Humphrey charged up the first hill and seemed intent on winning the women’s race. But 19-year-old Courtney Waldhauser had other ideas and “picked her off at the top” of the hill. Waldhauser just continued a relentless pace along Old Columbia, and Humphrey never had a chance. “There was always one more downhill [after the uphill],” Courtney said. Part of the Charm City Racing team coached by Murray Davis, Ms. Waldhauser easily won the women’s competition in 40:31, while Humphrey checked in 1:30 behind.

The women’s race saw the birth of a new running star in 10-year-old Avery Cunningham. Not at all intimidated by some of the fast women, the young Cunningham sped along ahead of most of them and was actually in third place among the women about half way through the race. She wound up fifth among the females, first in the 14-and-unders, with a spectacular time of 43:17. “It was my first 10k,” she said. Avery has started running for the Annapolis Running Shop and sported a singlet with “Kick my ARS.” Not many did, however.

The top two master runners, Doug Mock and Robyn Humphrey, each placed second in their respective gender groups and won overall awards. The master awards then went to Peter Keating and Janelle McIntyre. Fourth overall, Mr. Keating was very deferential to Mock’s performance, although Pete was in the mix for a mile or so. “I got a good view of his back,” Keating said. One of triathlete Janelle McIntyre’s goals was to beat Jim Carbary, and, with a 43:57, she nearly chased down the old grandmaster this time. Janelle finished eighth overall among the women.

Over 1500 runners registered for this year’s annual event. They enjoyed a pleasant spring morning without rain or wind. After finishing, runners and volunteers appreciated the fabulous outdoor brunch served by Clyde’s of Columbia. Post-race fare included oranges, bananas, California strawberries, HUGE croissants, fruit salad with yogut, bagels and granola bars, hearty pasta salad, and a particularly succulent white bean chicken chili. Runners washed down the food with Heinekin and Amstel Light, Coca Cola products, or bottled water. Hundreds of them enjoyed the picnic on the grass overlooking Lake Kittimuqundi.

Clyde’s has sponsored the 10k race for 31 years in a row, and not many race sponsors have stuck so steadfast to a race as Clyde’s. With the assistance of Clyde’s coordinator Brent Lomax, Sous Chef Sean Riley and Executive Chef Jason McIntosh personally directed the refreshments.

Clyde’s 10k represents the major road race of the year for the Howard County Striders. Dennis Albright assumed the race director’s role this year, replacing Charlie Brown, who served in an advisory capacity. The Striders wish to thank not only Clyde’s of Columbia, but also the Howard County Police, who directed traffic and ensured the safety of the runners.

The Howard County Striders’ Spring Series began on April 5 at Burleigh Manor Middle School. Brian Fleming and Catherine Lewis won the 2 mile race. Jeremy Rea and Rebecca Schwartz won the 5 mile race. All proceeds go to the Striders’ Scholarship Funds.

There were some flurries and “plenty of beautiful hills” (according to Peter Keating), and the Howard County Striders men’s racing team successfully defended its title at the 10 Mile Challenge race last Sunday. Finishing second and third overall, team captain Carlos Renjifo and Strider Runner of the Year Tom Williams both broke 55 minutes and paced the club along the treacherously hilly course through the Hickory Ridge and Atholton communities. “We were in a tight pack until just before five miles,” Carlos remembered. “Then this ‘Kyle’ [Smits] guy took off.” At that point in the race, the field was entering the really hilly section. Running for Falls Road Running Store, Smits stretched his lead on the pack “like an accordion” and finished with a decisive victory in 53:25. Carlos, the first Howard Countian, finished a distant second in 54:41. “It was certainly a decisive victory over me,” Williams said about his third place finish (54:56).

But the Stridermen, lead by Renjifo and Williams, placed six runners among the top ten overall, including first master Doug Mock (56:12), and overwhelmed the eight other men’s teams. The top 12 men scored on each team, with the score determined by adding up the finishing places of each of the dozen. The Stridermen beat the second place Falls Road men by over 100 points.

The Strider women’s team did not fare as well. “We need more young girls,” said Vanessa Cox, 47. Although runner of the year Sari Stenholm paced the Striderwomen in 1:07:04 and finished tenth among the women, and Stef Cummins came in not far behind (1:07:35), it was simply not enough to overcome three other women’s teams. A surprise winner, the women’s team from Westminster Road Runners Club took first among 10 other all-female teams. Anchoring the Westminsterians, Laura O’Hara easily won the women’s race in 1:01:15. The team also included “old” friends Sherry Stick, Diana Pool, Kelly Dworak, and Kelly Gruber. They placed three runners among the top five women. Striders remember these young women as the team who also won the Run Through the Grapevine team competition.

Falls Road may have missed out on the men’s and women’s team championships, finishing second in each case, but they won the overall (coed) championship over Howard County – 610 to 684 points. “And that’s without three of our top ringers!” exclaimed Ryan McGrath, who accepted the trophy.

The Howard County Striders host the 10 Mile Challenge Race every February. The race draws RRCA teams from throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia. The race was directed by Richard Bernstein. The Striders wish to thank the Howard Community College for use of its gymnasium for post-race ceremonies, and the Howard County Police for traffic control. The club also thanks the dozens of volunteers for marshalling the course on a damp, overcast morning on which snow actually fell.

The top three runners received individual trophies, and the winning teams won team trophies. For winning the overall championship, the Falls Road team earned what many consider “the ugliest trophy in the world,” which they keep at least until the next challenge race. All runners received signature 10-Mile Challenge gloves and all the soft pretzels they could eat. A total of 603 finished the race.
