2008 Penguin Pace Overall Results

When you not only set a personal record, but also a course record, and also beat the captain of the racing team, you know you’ve had a good day. That’s just what Kent Werner did at the annual Penguin Pace 5k in Columbia, MD, last Sunday. Kent trains with Carlos Renjifo, captain of the Howard County Strider racing team and last year’s winner of the race, and the two even warmed up together before the race. Wanting to keep Carlos in sight, Kent took the early lead and envisioned his adversary eventually passing him. But Kent never saw Carlos at all. “I thought he was playing with me!” Kent said. But he maintained his lead through the first downhill mile, and then through the second moderately flat mile, and then extended his lead on the final, laborious uphill to the finish. “No, I was racing,” Carlos said. Kent wound up handily winning the race in 15:55, the first time anyone had ever broken 16 minutes on the very hilly Longfellow neighborhood course.

The same drama nearly repeated itself in the women’s race. National-class duathlete Marjan Huizing, also a past winner of the Penguin Pace and favorite to win this year, survived a serious challenge from local favorite Tasha Clearman. Tasha spotted Marjan the early lead, but closed to within a few seconds on the last two hills, causing the leader to look back over her shoudler. Huizing hung on to win in 19:54, while Clearman settled for second in 20:04. Tasha might have won except she had run 17 miles the day before. “I’ve never run a 5k before,” she said. “I think I’ll try another one some day.”

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman was on hand not only to help start the race, but also to participate in the event. He took so much heat last year from not running, that he decided “I’m running” this year.

The Penguin Pace sold out with 400 registrations during the week preceding the race. A total of 339 finished. Age group winners received the signature knit caps of the Penguin Pace, while the overall winners also received gift certificates from Feet First of Wilde Lake. All registered runners received a moisture-management long-sleeve t-shirt. After the race, runners gathered in the Florence Bain Senior Center in Columbia for a sumptuous brunch catered by the Elkridge Furnace Inn (c. 1744).

Directed by Arleen Dinneen, the race is staged early every February by the Howard County Striders. The Striders wish to thank the Florence Bain Senior Center for hosting the post-race brunch, and the Howard County Police for supervising the traffic control.

Resolution Run 8K Prediction Run

One hundred fifty six entrants started the new year right with an 8K (4.97 mile) run. The object was to finish as close as possible to 11 am by starting anytime beforehand without the use of a watch. The uncanny ability of runners to gauge their pace was clear by the 100 entrants who finished within a minute of the target. Fifteen year old, Jennifer King, took top honors, just missing the mark by 1/5 of a second.

Steven Crane may have clobbered the men’s field at the 31st Annual Metric Marathon last Sunday, but the story might have been different had not “some young guy” forced the pace for the first 14 miles of the race. Steve’s competition turned out to be a former UMBC runner named Shawn Shorky. Shawn had sprained his ankle a month before and thought he could push through the injury, and he might have too if Crane had not forced the pace. When the ankle became unbearable, Shawn dropped out. Special race coordinator Paul Goldenberg actually gave him a ride back to the start.

A national-class runner, Crane came north to Columbia from Arlington, VA, with his fleet friends from the Pacers running store– Chris Farley and Eric Kean. Crane posted a time of 1:30:38– the fastest Metric Marathon since Peter Dougharty won the event in 1999 with a 1:30:13. Six minutes and over one mile behind Crane, masters runner Tom Banchy became the beneficiary of the withdrawl and finished in second place (1:36:49). “I never saw the leader,” Tom admitted, “But at least I was the first old guy to finish!”

Denise Knickman led the women’s race for the first 13 miles. But when she turned onto the bike path, the uneven, meandering surfaces slowed down her road-race pace. “I had a rough time on the bike paths and couldn’t get used to them,” she said. That gave Alana Van Allen the chance she needed. She overhauled Knickman somewhere on the leaf-strewn bike paths of Long Reach and held on to win the women’s division in 1:51:30.

Among the over-40 runners, the aforementioned Tom Banchy, second overall, was the first master runner across the finish line. He had only run the Metric once before. The fastest woman over 40 was Linda Foley, who finished third among the women in 1:53:36. The second-fastest woman was a grandmaster. Recently turned 50, Dorothy Beckett had celebrated her birthday with a 3:27 at the New York City Marathon, and then felt compelled to run the Metric two weeks later– where she beat nearly all the master women as well as all the grandmasters. Watch out!

The Columbia 5k race accompanied the Metric Marathon. The shorter race is for the speedsters not feeling up to the longer Metric. Robert Santoro traveled all the way from North Quincy, MA (it’s right outside Boston) to win the 5k in a blazing 16:09, while Kensington’s Patty Zerfas bested the women’s field (20:19). Notably, the fastest master in the 5k race was a grandmaster: 50-year-old John Chall finished seventh overall in 18:58.

Although the rain held off until the afternoon, it was such a cold and raw day that many runners left immediately after they finished, including Crane and Van Allen. After the race, some runners actually did hang around Lake Kittimuquindi for random awards, pizza from Jerry’s Subs, and lots of apple juice. “Actually, I can’t wait to get home and take a hot shower,” said Sandy Ford (1st, 45-49W). Those race and age group winners who stuck around received handsome wood plaques and gift certificates from Feet First of Wilde Lake. 337 finished the full Metric Marathon (26.2 km or 16.4 miles), while 216 complete the 5k fun run.

John and Ann Worley directed the Metric Marathon on behalf of the Howard County Striders, who stage the race each December. This year before the race, the Striders held a going-away ceremony for Miles Weigold, announcer and official “voice” of the Howard County Striders. Delegate Elizabeth Bobo presented Miles with an honorary decree from the Maryland State Senate, and he also received a Volunteer of the Year award from the Road Runners Club of America for 2000 hours of service. The Striders also made a donation on Miles’ behalf to the Kennedy-Krieger Institute of Johns Hopkins.

The Striders thank the Howard County Police for their expert traffic direction during the race and the dozens of volunteers (especially Boy Scout Troop 734 from DelMar at the 14 mile water stop) who braved the dreary weather on Sunday morning.

Stef Commins had not run a race in a year and a half, and she had not run a cross country race in two years, but she had little trouble dispatching a strong women’s field at the 14th Annual Run Through the Grapevine 8k at Linganore Winery. She bolted to an early lead on past winner Sherry Stick, mastered the steep hills and uneven surfaces, and swept to victory in 33:11. She found herself racing only against the men. Her victory was all the more amazing because she arrived at the race site only five minutes before the 10:00 AM start. After the obligatory bathroom stop, “I was running downhill to the start [while] pinning on my race number,” she said. That was her warm-up. A graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus, Ms. Commins trains in Patapsco State Park and was encouraged to run the race by her friend Izudin Mehmedovic.

The men’s race proved a much tighter competition. A five or six man pack stayed together for the first two miles of the race, a considerable feat itself considering the difficulty of the terrain. Tom Williams decided he would make his move on the treacherously steep uphill at 2½ miles. “I planned my whole race around that,” he said. Sure enough, Tom’s awesome surge up that hill threw his competitors into chaos and gave him the lead, which he successfully managed for the next 1½ miles. Alas! He made his move too soon. Randy McDermott and Joe Wiegner regained lost ground on the next uphill and caught Williams at the top of the hill at four miles. The three stayed together but fragmented on the final uphill that took them through the grapevines for a final time. Wiegner seized the lead and held off McDermott for the men’s win in 28:25.

In the men’s master competition (runners 40 and over), Phil Lang beat Sheldon Degenhardt by 20 seconds. Phil had run the Marine Corps Marathon the week before (in 2:53 no less) and no one (not even Phil) expected him to run the Grapevine very fast. However, he proved everyone wrong. “Phil was just ahead of me the whole way,” Sheldon related wistfully. “I guess I’m eroding faster than the hills.”

Kathy Bernetti placed first among the master women (37:40). Kathy said she did not fall down, “but the guy in front me did.” She did not help him up! The cross country race also included team competitions: 25 teams competed in seven different age and gender divisions. The fastest team from the Howard County Striders consisted of McDermott and Williams (second and third overall), Mike Colaicovo (sixth) and Sheldon Degenhardt (11th), but they were the only team in the Open Men division so they won hands down. The open coed division proved the most competitive, with no fewer than 10 teams. With Izzy Mehmedovic and Stef Commins, the “College Rejects” from UMBC crushed their competition

The top five of each gender won gift certificates from Feet First as well as certificates for wine at the Winery. Age group winners received gift certificates for wine (except for those who where underage!). Everyone who crossed the finish line was handed a wine glass.

The Run Through the Grapevine 8k cross country race is staged each autumn by the Howard County Striders. Jason Tripp directed the race, but he enjoyed considerable support from Gerry Clapper, who founded the race in the early 1990’s. Gerry baked 41 loaves of banana-nut bread, including a new flavor this year called chocolate cocoanut. Post-race amenities included cider, apples, and bagels, but everyone came for the nut

Women’s Distance Festival 5K

With a 5:20 first mile, Teyba Naser of Washington, DC, quickly dispatched her rivals at the Women’s Distance Festival 5k in Columbia last Sunday. “I was hoping she would fall back, but she never did,” said Jen Ecker, who finished third in the race. “She went off into the distance on the backside of the course,” Ms. Ecker said poetically about watching Naser cruise away near the half-way point in the 3.1-mile loop around Hickory Ridge. Naser owns a 15:45 personal record in the 5k event and said, through an interpreter, “I am just looking for a 5k or 10k race each weekend.” This weekend was Columbia. The heat and the hills of the course “made a little difference, but not much” Teyba continued.

Two of the fastest women in Howard County had a much closer contest for the master woman championship. After 2½ miles, with the finish line almost in sight, Robyn Humphrey held a slight advantage over Vanessa Cox. But Humphrey lost time going around the wrong side of a cone at the last turn, and Cox took advantage of the mistake. “I told myself I had better get my butt moving,” Vanessa recalled. “Then I pounced.” The pounce worked, and Cox pulled away from Humphrey to claim the over-40 title in 19:33, only six seconds ahead of her rival, who admittedly has not fully recovered from a recent ankle injury. The two women finished fifth and sixth overall in a field of 300.

The WDF featured mother-daughter team competition. The “Lactic Legs” team of Karen and Alyssa Shouse handily won the competition for teams daughters 12-and-under. They started running together, but the heat slowed down young Alyssa who had beaten her mother the year before. “I told her one of us has to go [faster]” Karen said. “Besides, I had a few people I had to pick off.” The team of Gloria Roberts and Sandra Griffin took the team victory for daughters over-12. They achieved their win by Gloria placing first among the 10-19 females and Sandra second in the 40-44 age group. Not to be outdone, Theresa McFadden of the second place team of “Remus’ Runners” did a cartwheel in accepting the team award. No word on whether her daughter Brittany Rooks was embarrassed. A total of 20 mother-daughter teams.

The race also served as the graduation event for 50 or so Females in Training, who specifically trained throughout the Spring in a Howard County Strider program to prepare to run a 5k. Each FIT woman wore an orange t-shirt with a black ribbon to commemorate her graduation. Many of these women came out to train in spite of heavy family commitments. “It was a very empowering sort of thing,” one woman commented.

Staged every summer by the Howard County Striders, the all-woman race was directed by Tacy Feliciano and Dorothy Beckett. Age group and team winners received gift certificates from Feet First of Wilde Lake and lucite plaques. The master and grandmaster women received gift certificates from Absolutely Wine and Spirits. After the race, finishers gathered in the air conditioned gymnasium of the Howard Community College for refreshments and awards.

The Howard County Striders wish to thank the Howard County Police for traffic control, Steve Musselman and the Howard Community College for use of its gymnasium and parking lot, and the Howard County General Hospital for a generous donation. The Columbia WDF represents one of many Women’s Distance Festivals held throughout the nation in the summer time to celebrate women’s running.

All Fruit Relay

Nine creatively named teams carried various fruit batons for this annual event, a 4 x 2 mile relay. “We Will Plummel You” was the winning team, but last place team, “Melon-choly” was admired for running with the largest fruit, a honeydew melon. The high 80’s temperatures added to everyone’s effort. Both 1st and last place teams won prizes, the “Columbia Running Routes” book, written by Feet First founder, Warren Ohlrich.
